Roger Wicker on Energy & Oil

Republican Jr Senator; previously Republican Representative (MS-1)

Co-authored a bill for more offshore drilling

Wicker appeared Wednesday afternoon at the Reedy Creek Oilfield in the Sharon community in Jones County to express his frustration that the bill he co-authored with Senator Cochran--Gas Price Reduction Act--never was brought up for discussion since being introduced in June. The act he and Cochran co-authored would open up more offshore drilling, delve into oil shale deposits in the West, encourage development of affordable alternative energy sources and crackdown on oil speculators.

Voted NO on tax incentives for energy production and conservation.

OnTheIssues.org Explanation:A "Cloture Motion" would end debate on the bill, and then allow a vote on passage. This motion failed (3/5ths of the Senators must vote YEA), based on objections of how the new incentives would be paid for.Congressional Summary:A bill to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide Tax incentives for energy production and conservation, to extend certain expiring provisions, and to provide individual income tax relief.

Gas tax holiday for the summer.

Wicker co-sponsored suspending the highway fuel tax for the summer

Amends the Internal Revenue Code to suspend excise taxes on gasoline and diesel fuels between May 26, 2008, and September 1, 2008. Provides for reimbursement from the Treasury to the Highway Trust Fund for any reduction in Trust Fund receipts resulting from such suspension.

Expresses the policy of Congress that:
  1. consumers immediately receive the benefit of the reduction in taxes resulting from this Act; and
  2. transportation motor fuels producers and other dealers take necessary actions to reduce fuel prices to reflect such reduction in taxes.
